What MediaMate does

MediaMate gives every HTML5 video on the web the same set of controls: precise speed from 0.07x to 16x, skip keys, picture-in-picture and a small speed badge you can click. Your speed is remembered per site, so a course platform can always play at 1.75x while music videos stay at normal speed.

It is built for learning. Press B to bookmark the moment a lecturer explains something, add a note, and find it again later in a searchable library that exports to Markdown. Long videos resume where you stopped, and if the page shows a transcript you can search it and jump straight to the line.

Everything stays in your browser. MediaMate makes no network requests and has no download feature - it controls playback, nothing more.

Key features

  • Speed control for any HTML5 video from 0.07x to 16x, with presets in the popup
  • Keyboard shortcuts (S slower, D faster, R reset, G preferred speed, Z/X skip, B bookmark, P picture-in-picture), fully configurable
  • Remembers your speed per site, and keeps it when players reset to 1x on the next video
  • Timestamp bookmarks with notes, a searchable library, and Markdown/JSON export and import
  • Resume long videos where you left off
  • Picture-in-picture from a shortcut or the speed badge
  • Search a transcript the page already shows (YouTube's transcript panel or the video's caption track) and jump to the line
  • Shortcuts never fire while you type, and can be paused per site

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Open MediaMate controls Alt Shift M

Shortcuts can be changed in your browser's extension shortcut settings.

Privacy

Speeds, positions, bookmarks and notes stay in this browser. MediaMate makes no network requests, has no account and no analytics, and never downloads or copies video.

What it can access

The playback state of HTML5 videos on pages you visit (speed, current time, duration), the page title and address when you bookmark a moment, and an on-page transcript only while you search it in the popup.

Where data is stored

storage.local in this browser profile: settings, per-site speeds, the last 300 playback positions, bookmarks with notes.

Network requests

None. MediaMate never contacts any server.

How long it is kept

Positions roll over after 300 videos. Bookmarks stay until you delete them in the library or remove the extension.

No account, no analytics, no advertising, no selling or sharing of data, and no remotely hosted code.

Permissions and why they are needed

  • Storage

Saves your settings, the speed you chose for each site, playback positions, and your timestamp bookmarks and notes on this device.

  • Scripting

Adds the video controls to tabs that were already open before you installed MediaMate, when you open the popup there.

Runs inside web pages on: all websites.

Good to know

  • Works with HTML5 <video>. Flash, canvas-only and DRM players that hide the video element are not controllable; videos inside closed shadow DOM cannot be reached.
  • When a page has several frames with videos, the popup controls the first frame that answers; keyboard shortcuts work in whichever frame has focus.
  • Picture-in-picture needs a key press or click on the page (browser rule), so the popup button can fail until you press P on the page. Firefox does not expose the picture-in-picture API to extensions; use Firefox's own picture-in-picture toggle.
  • Skip-silence is not included: Web Audio cannot analyse cross-origin media on most sites, so it would not work reliably.
  • Transcript search only uses text the page already shows. MediaMate does not fetch or generate transcripts.
  • The speed badge is not visible over native full-screen video elements; shortcuts still work there.

Frequently asked questions

Which sites does MediaMate work on?

Any site that uses a standard HTML5 video element: YouTube, Vimeo, course platforms, news sites and most embedded players. Players that hide the video inside closed shadow DOM or use DRM-only rendering may not be controllable.

Will the shortcuts interfere with typing?

No. Shortcuts are ignored while a text field, search box or editor has focus, Ctrl/Cmd combinations are left to the page and browser, and you can pause MediaMate on any site.

Can MediaMate download videos?

No. It only changes how a video plays in the page. It never saves or copies media.

Where are my bookmarks stored?

In your browser's extension storage on this device. Export them as Markdown or JSON from the library to back them up or move them.

Why is there no skip-silence?

Browsers block audio analysis of videos served from other domains, which is most streaming sites, so the feature could not work reliably. We would rather leave it out than ship something that fails silently.
