Weather Card Widget

Show visitors the weather where your business, campsite or venue actually is. You enter the place name and its coordinates once; the card shows the forecast for this hour, a wind arrow with compass text, humidity, rain or snow and an hour-by-hour strip, in that place's local time, credited to MET Norway.

How it works

The frame requests /api/embed/weather with the latitude and longitude rounded to two decimals (about 1 km), so every site embedding the same harbour or trailhead shares one cached copy. A2Z's server fetches MET Norway's Locationforecast 2.0 compact product, honours its Expires header and If-Modified-Since, and returns up to 72 rows: hourly for roughly 60 hours, then 6-hour steps. The card picks the row whose period contains the present moment and labels it Forecast for 19:00 - a model value, never an observation from a station. Wind arrives in metres per second as the bearing it blows from; the arrow is turned 180 degrees to show where it is heading and the text names the 16-point compass sector (225 degrees is SW, south-west). Times are converted from UTC with the browser's tz database into the IANA zone you give, such as Europe/Lisbon. Every 15 minutes the card asks again; hidden tabs stop asking. A 429, 503 or offline answer shows a plain message and no figures, or keeps a good copy under three hours old with a note saying so.

Method

  • Temperature (F) = C x 9/5 + 32; shown rounded to whole degrees
  • Wind: km/h = m/s x 3.6; mph = m/s x 3600 / 1609.344; m/s shown to 1 decimal
  • Compass sector = round(bearing / 22.5) mod 16 over N, NNE, NE ... NNW; arrow angle = bearing + 180
  • Precipitation: inches = mm / 25.4; the amount covers the row's period (1 hour, or 6 hours later on)
  • Current row = the row with start <= now < start + period; strip = the next 12 hourly rows
  • Local time = UTC instant formatted with Intl.DateTimeFormat in the chosen IANA zone (DST included)

Worked examples

Wind in three unit sets

Inputs: MET row: wind 4.1 m/s from 225 deg

Result: Metric 15 km/h from SW; UK 9 mph from SW; SI 4.1 m/s from SW; arrow rotated 45 deg

4.1 x 3.6 = 14.76 km/h; 4.1 x 3600 / 1609.344 = 9.17 mph; 225 / 22.5 = 10, the tenth sector after N is SW, and the arrow points downwind to the north-east.

Temperature in Fahrenheit

Inputs: MET row: 12.3 C, units = imperial (US)

Result: 54 F

12.3 x 9/5 + 32 = 54.14, shown as 54 F; with metric or UK units the same row reads 12 C.

Coordinates that are refused

Inputs: lat 91, lon 0 (or lat 51 deg 30')

Result: Latitude must be between -90 (South Pole) and 90 (North Pole) - no request is sent

The card validates coordinates in the browser before any network call, so a typo never reaches A2Z or MET Norway.

Limitations

  • Model forecast for a 1-9 km grid cell, not a measurement: valleys, coasts and city centres can differ by a few degrees and gusts are not shown.
  • One place per card; the label is whatever you type, so check that the coordinates really match it.
  • No geocoding: you supply the coordinates. No severe-weather warnings: for those, link to your national weather service.
  • Times follow the visitor's browser time-zone data; a rule change after their last browser update can shift them by an hour until they update.

Where publishers use it

  • A campsite, marina or ski school homepage showing conditions at its own pitch, pontoon or slope
  • A golf club or outdoor tennis centre helping members decide whether to book a tee time today
  • A hotel or holiday-let site giving guests the forecast for the property rather than the nearest big city
  • A local news or parish site in a village that general weather apps lump in with a distant town
  • A tour operator page for a walking route, embedded once per trailhead with its own coordinates

Questions

How do I find the latitude and longitude?

Open the place in Google Maps or OpenStreetMap, right-click the exact spot and copy the two numbers shown, latitude first, for example 50.7184, -3.5339 for Exeter Quay. Use decimal degrees with a minus sign for south and west; 51 deg 30' style values are refused. The card rounds to two decimals, roughly 1.1 km north-south, before asking for the forecast, which is plenty for a town or a beach.

Which time zone should I type?

The IANA name for the place, such as Europe/London, America/Denver or Australia/Perth - not an abbreviation like MST. The card checks the name against the browser's own zone list. Leave it empty and times follow each visitor's own zone, with a label saying so; a name the browser does not know falls back the same way and the label says the embedded zone was not recognised.

Is the temperature measured or forecast?

Forecast. MET Norway's models (MEPS at 2.5 km over the Nordic countries, ECMWF at about 9 km elsewhere) give values for each hour; the card shows the hour containing the present moment, labelled with its time. A thermometer at your door can differ by a few degrees, especially in valleys, cities and on coasts.

How fresh is it and what happens when MET Norway is down?

A2Z's server keeps each location for as long as MET's Expires header says (usually 30 minutes, clamped to 10 minutes - 2 hours) and the card checks every 15 minutes while visible. If MET cannot be reached the server may serve its last copy for up to six hours, marked as a cached copy on the card. With nothing usable it says the forecast is unavailable and shows no numbers.

Why is there no feels-like temperature?

Apparent temperature needs a published formula - the NWS heat index (Rothfusz regression) above about 27 C or Environment Canada's wind chill below 10 C - and the result is easily misread as a measurement. The card shows the inputs (temperature, wind, humidity) instead; A2Z's separate heat index and wind chill calculators apply those formulas.

Can I use my own credit line or hide the MET Norway credit?

No. MET Norway's data is licensed under CC BY 4.0, which requires credit, a link to the licence and an indication of changes. The card always shows Weather data: MET Norway, CC BY 4.0 with both links, states that A2Z converted, rounded and summarised it, and gives the time MET last updated the forecast.
