A plain iframe. Works everywhere, including site builders that strip scripts. Adjust height if your content needs more room.
<div data-a2z-widget="uk-working-days-calculator" data-height="830"></div> <script async src="https://a2z.tools/embed.js"></script>
Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.
Works with
How it works
Every day in the range is classified once: Saturday and Sunday are weekend days, a weekday found in the chosen division's GOV.UK bank holiday list is a bank holiday, a weekday the visitor lists as an extra closure is skipped, and everything else is a working day. In count mode the end date is always included and the start date is included unless that switch is off, so Monday 21 December 2026 to Friday 8 January 2027 is 19 calendar days, 4 weekend days, 3 bank holidays in England and Wales (Christmas Day, the Boxing Day substitute on 28 December and New Year's Day) and 12 working days. In add mode the start date is not counted: 3 working days after Wednesday 23 December 2026 is Wednesday 30 December. Dates are handled as day numbers, so clock changes cannot move a day. If the range runs past the years GOV.UK has published, the widget warns that bank holidays are missing there.
Calculation method
- Weekday from day number n (days since 1970-01-01): (n + 4) mod 7, 0 = Sunday
- Working day = Monday-Friday AND not a GOV.UK bank holiday for the division AND not an extra closure
- Count = working days in [start (optional), end]; Add = step forward one day at a time until N working days have passed
- Coverage = 1 January of the first year to 31 December of the last year in the GOV.UK list; outside it only weekends and closures are excluded
Worked examples
Across Christmas and New Year
Inputs: England and Wales, 21 December 2026 to 8 January 2027, both dates counted
Result: 12 working days (19 calendar days, 4 weekend days, 3 bank holidays)
Christmas Day, Boxing Day substitute (28 Dec) and New Year's Day fall on weekdays.
Dispatch date
Inputs: England and Wales, 3 working days after 23 December 2026
Result: Wednesday 30 December 2026
24 Dec counts, 25 and 28 Dec are bank holidays, 26-27 Dec are a weekend, then 29 and 30 Dec.
Limitations
- Working days are Monday to Friday; shift patterns and other working weeks are not supported.
- Bank holidays come from GOV.UK via A2Z's server; if it is unreachable and no cached copy exists, no count is shown.
- Not a calculator for statutory or court deadlines, which have their own counting rules.
Where publishers use it
- An online shop promising dispatch within 3 working days and showing the date over Christmas
- A Scottish letting agent counting working days for a repair, where 2 January is a holiday
- A freelancer or agency estimating the delivery date of a 20-working-day project
- A payroll or HR page counting working days in a month for pro-rata pay
- A Northern Ireland firm's customer page with St Patrick's Day and 12 July excluded automatically
Questions
Is the start date counted?
In "between two dates" mode both dates count by default, as most people expect for a period such as Monday to Friday (5 working days); switch it off to count only the days after the start. In "add" mode the start date is never counted: 1 working day after a Friday is the following Monday.
Does this work for notice periods and legal deadlines?
Not as an authority. Statutory notice periods, court deadlines and limitation periods have their own rules - some use clear days, calendar months or exclude court closure days - so check the rule that applies before relying on a count.
Which bank holidays are excluded?
Those GOV.UK lists for the chosen division, including substitute days. For example, Scotland also excludes Monday 4 January 2027 (the substitute for 2 January), which England and Wales count as a working day.
How do I add our office closure days?
Type them in the extra closure box as YYYY-MM-DD, one per line (up to 366). A closure on a weekend or bank holiday is not double-counted.
How far ahead can I count?
Up to 20 years, but GOV.UK publishes bank holidays only a couple of years ahead (to the end of 2028 when checked). Beyond that the count excludes weekends and closures only and a warning appears.
