Holiday Closure Notice Widget

Publish your Christmas, Easter or summer closure dates once and let the notice keep itself tidy: past days drop off automatically, today's line is highlighted, and visitors see when you reopen and who to call in an emergency.

Works with

How it works

Each line is one closure period: a date or a range, a vertical bar, then what happens - "24 Dec 2026 | Closing at 15:00", "25 Dec 2026 - 26 Dec 2026 | Closed" or "27 Dec 2026 | 10:00 - 16:00". Dates can be written 24 Dec 2026, Dec 24 2026 or 2026-12-24, with an optional weekday; ranges use " - " or " to " and may span up to 62 days. Lines that cannot be read are skipped and counted in a small note so you can fix them. The widget works out today's calendar date in your business's IANA time zone - at 23:30 UTC on 24 December it is already the 25th in Sydney but still the 24th in London - hides every period that has ended, sorts the rest and marks the one covering today with a Today label and aria-current. Dates are formatted for the visitor's locale (Fri 25 Dec in the UK, Fri, Dec 25 in the US), with the year added only when it differs from the current one. It re-checks once a minute, so the list moves on at midnight without a reload.

Method

  • Today = calendar date of now in the business IANA zone (visitor's zone if none is set)
  • Shown periods = those with end date >= today, sorted by start; today flagged when start <= today <= end
  • Card layout lists every remaining period; bar layout shows the next one, the one after and a count of the rest

Worked examples

On Christmas morning in London

Inputs: Periods 24 Dec (closing 15:00), 25-26 Dec (closed), 27 Dec (10:00-16:00), 1-2 Jan 2027 (closed); zone Europe/London; now 25 Dec 2026 10:00 UTC; locale en-GB

Result: Three rows: "Fri 25 Dec – Sat 26 Dec" with a Today label and "Closed"; "Sun 27 Dec" with "10:00 - 16:00"; "Fri 1 Jan 2027 – Sat 2 Jan 2027" with "Closed"

24 Dec has ended so it is hidden; the 2027 dates carry their year because it differs from the current one.

Same instant, two businesses

Inputs: Now 24 Dec 2026 23:30 UTC; a shop in Europe/London and one in Australia/Sydney, both closed on 25 Dec

Result: London shows 25 Dec as upcoming; Sydney marks 25 Dec as Today

Sydney is UTC+11 in December, so it is already 10:30 on the 25th there.

Limitations

  • It does not know public holidays itself; every date comes from your list.
  • Only whole days are compared: a "Closing at 15:00" line stays visible for the whole of that day rather than switching at 15:00.
  • At most 60 lines are read, and the dates must include the year.
  • It shows notes, not your weekly hours - pair it with the Business Hours widget for the regular timetable.

Where publishers use it

  • A bakery or butcher's site listing Christmas Eve early closing, the Christmas shutdown and New Year hours
  • A dental or veterinary practice showing Easter bank-holiday closures with an out-of-hours phone number
  • A B2B supplier's contact page explaining the August factory shutdown and the last order date
  • A school or council office posting half-term and festive closure dates on its contact page
  • An online shop's delivery page in bar layout: "Holiday hours: closed 25-26 Dec, back 27 Dec"

Questions

Do I have to remove old dates?

No. Any period whose last day is before today in your time zone is hidden automatically, so last week's Christmas Eve line disappears on the 25th. When every listed period has passed the card says normal opening hours apply, which means you can leave the embed on the page all year.

Which time zone decides "today"?

The IANA zone you enter, for example Europe/London or Australia/Sydney. A visitor in New York looking at a London shop at 20:00 on 24 December local time (01:00 on the 25th in London) already sees the 25 December line marked Today. Without a zone each visitor's own date is used.

How do I write a period?

One per line: date or range, a vertical bar, then the note. "25 Dec 2026 - 26 Dec 2026 | Closed", "Thu 24 Dec 2026 | Closing at 15:00" and "2027-01-02 | 10:00 - 16:00" all work. The year is required, because "24 Dec" alone is ambiguous in late December; a range longer than 62 days is refused as a probable typo.

Card or bar - which layout should I use?

The card (about 430 px tall with five periods) suits a contact or opening-hours page. The bar is a single strip of about 120 px for the top of a shop or delivery page; it shows the next period, the one after it and "+2 more", and keeps the reopening line.

Can I add an emergency number?

Yes. Add the text, for example "Out-of-hours vet: 01632 960123", and a tel:, mailto: or https: link. Phone and email links open in the same tab; web links open in a new tab with rel="noopener nofollow". javascript: or data: links are dropped.

Does it know my country's bank holidays?

No - it shows exactly the dates you type, so it works for any country, religion or company shutdown. For the official UK list see GOV.UK's bank holidays page; for US federal holidays see 5 U.S.C. 6103.
