How it works
A business day here is Monday to Friday and not an observed federal holiday. The holidays are generated from 5 U.S.C. 6103 for every year the range touches, and each is placed on its observed day: Independence Day 2026 is skipped on Friday, July 3, and the January 1, 2028 holiday is skipped on Friday, December 31, 2027. Inauguration Day can be switched on for the Washington, DC area. In count mode both the first and last date are included, so November 20 to December 31, 2026 holds 30 weekdays, less Thanksgiving and Christmas, which leaves 28. In add mode the start date is not counted: three business days after Wednesday, July 1, 2026 is Tuesday, July 7. Extra closures (a company's Christmas Eve, a snow day) can be listed as dates; lines that are not real dates are reported. Unlike the general Business Days Calculator, which needs every holiday typed in, and the Date Difference Calculator, which counts calendar days, this one knows the US federal calendar.
Calculation method
- Business day = weekday (Mon-Fri) and not an observed federal holiday and not an extra closure
- Observed holiday = 6103(a) date; Saturday -> Friday before, Sunday -> Monday after
- Count mode: business days in [start, end], both ends included; reversed dates are swapped
- Add mode: step one day at a time from the start (not counted) until N business days are reached; negative N steps back

Limitations
- Federal holidays only; state, bank and religious holidays must be added as extra closures.

Questions
How many business days are in 2026?
250. The year has 261 weekdays and all 11 federal holidays are observed on weekdays - Independence Day moves to Friday, July 3 - so 261 - 11 = 250.
Is the start date counted?
In count mode yes, both ends are included when they are business days. In add mode no: one business day after a Friday is the following Monday, or Tuesday when Monday is a federal holiday.
How is this different from the Business Days Calculator?
The general calculator works for any country but has no holidays built in - you paste them. This one already knows every US federal holiday for 2021-2100 and moves weekend holidays to their observed weekday.
Are state holidays or bank holidays included?
No, only the federal list. Add state holidays, bank closures or company days in the extra closures box, one YYYY-MM-DD date per line.
Why does 2027 have only 249 business days?
2027 has 261 weekdays. Its own 11 holidays all land on weekdays once moved - Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, Independence Day on Monday, July 5 and Christmas on Friday, December 24 - and Friday, December 31, 2027 is also lost because New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday. 261 - 12 = 249.
Is Inauguration Day skipped?
Only if you switch it on. It is a holiday solely for federal and DC-government staff in the Washington, DC area, on January 20 every four years (next in 2029, a Saturday, when no weekday is lost).
