How it works

A round pizza's area is pi times the radius squared, which is why size is so deceptive: doubling the diameter quadruples the pizza. An 18-inch pizza covers pi x 9 x 9 = 254.5 square inches, while a 12-inch covers 113.1 - so two 12-inch pizzas, 226.2 square inches together, are still about 11% smaller than one 18-inch. Rectangular pizzas are width times length. For each option the widget multiplies the area of one pizza by the quantity, divides the total price by the total area and ranks the results; the lowest price per unit of area is the best value. With two 12-inch pizzas for 24.00 and one 18-inch for 20.00, the 18-inch costs 0.079 per square inch against 0.106. The third option is optional - leave its size and price blank to compare two. Inches or centimetres follow the units switch, and the bar shows how much pizza each option delivers.

Calculation method

  • Round area = pi x diameter^2 / 4; rectangle area = width x length
  • Total area = area of one pizza x quantity
  • Value = total price / total area (per sq in or per square cm)
  • Best value = the option with the lowest price per unit of area

Worked examples

Two mediums or one large

Inputs: 2 x 12-inch round for 24.00; 1 x 18-inch round for 20.00

Result: 18-inch is best value: 0.079 per sq in vs 0.106

254.5 sq in vs 226.2 sq in - the large gives about 13% more pizza (12.5% before rounding).

Adding a tray pizza

Inputs: Third option 12 x 16 inch rectangle for 12.00

Result: Rectangle wins at 0.0625 per sq in

192 sq in for 12.00.

Limitations

  • Assumes flat pizzas of even thickness; it compares area, not weight or toppings.
  • Menu sizes are often approximate - a 'large' can be an inch smaller than advertised.
  • Delivery fees and discount codes need to be included in the price you enter.

Where publishers use it

  • A pizzeria's menu page showing why the large is the better deal
  • A maths teacher's lesson on area of circles with a real-life hook
  • A student-life blog on feeding a flat on a budget
  • A party-planning post estimating how many pizzas to order
  • A consumer-advice site comparing takeaway deals

Questions

Is one 18-inch pizza really bigger than two 12-inch pizzas?

Yes. One 18-inch round is 254.5 square inches; two 12-inch rounds are 2 x 113.1 = 226.2 square inches. The single large pizza has about 12.5% more area, because area grows with the square of the diameter.

Does the crust count?

The widget measures the whole circle including the crust. If you only care about the topped area, subtract about an inch from the diameter on each pizza - for example, compare 16 and 10 inches instead of 18 and 12.

How do I compare a rectangular pizza?

Choose Rectangle and enter the width and length. A 12 by 16 inch tray pizza is 192 square inches, more than a 15-inch round at 176.7.

Why price per square inch instead of per slice?

Slice counts depend on how the shop cuts the pizza - a 12-inch can be cut into 6 or 8. Area is the only fair measure of how much pizza you get.

Does thickness matter?

It does for how filling the pizza is, but area is what shops size and price by. A deep-dish pizza of the same diameter contains more dough; compare deep-dish with deep-dish.

How many pizzas should I order for a group?

A frequently used party rule is about three slices per adult, and a 14-inch pie is usually cut into eight slices, so twelve hungry teenagers or adults need roughly four or five 14-inch pizzas. Compare total square inches rather than counting pies: a 14-inch round holds 153.9 square inches, almost exactly the same as two 10-inch rounds (157.1).

Why do Neapolitan and New York pizzas compare differently?

A Neapolitan pizza is small, around 10-12 inches, with a puffy cornicione rim that takes a bigger share of the surface; a New York pie is 18 inches with a thin edge. Comparing their price per square inch is fair for quantity, but the thin-crust slice carries more cheese and sauce per square inch.
