IRS Mileage Reimbursement Calculator Widget
Work out a mileage claim at the IRS standard rates - 70 cents for 2025, 72.5 cents for January-June 2026 and 76 cents from July 2026 for business - from one total or a pasted trip log, where each trip gets the rate in force on its date.

Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.

How it works
Pick the purpose: business, medical (which also covers moving for active-duty military) or charitable. The rate table holds three IRS periods - 2025 (business 70, medical 21 cents), January 1 to June 30, 2026 (72.5 and 20.5 cents, IR-2025-128) and July 1 to December 31, 2026 (76 and 23.5 cents, IR-2026-29, the mid-year increase). The charitable rate is 14 cents in every period because 26 U.S.C. 170(i) fixes it in the statute. Type a single mileage total, or paste a trip log with one trip per line as "2026-07-14 | Office | Client site | 42.5"; each line is checked, priced at the rate for its own date when the period is set to automatic, rounded to the cent and summed, so a log spanning June and July correctly mixes 72.5 and 76 cents. Lines with an impossible date or mileage are skipped and listed rather than guessed.
Calculation method
- Amount per trip = round(miles x rate in cents / 100, 2)
- Rate period (automatic) = the IRS period whose dates contain the trip date
- Charitable rate = 14 cents per mile (26 U.S.C. 170(i))
- Total = sum of trip amounts; total miles = sum of trip miles
Worked examples
Business miles in the second half of 2026
Inputs: Purpose business; period Jul-Dec 2026; 250 miles
Result: $190.00
250 x 76 cents.
Trip log across the July 1 change
Inputs: Purpose business; period automatic; log "2026-06-29 | Office | Client | 40" and "2026-07-02 | Office | Airport | 20"
Result: $44.20 for 60 miles
40 x 72.5 cents = $29.00 plus 20 x 76 cents = $15.20.
Charitable driving
Inputs: Purpose charity; period 2025; 100 miles
Result: $14.00
100 x 14 cents, the statutory rate.
An estimate at IRS standard rates for general information, not tax advice; your employer's policy and your records decide what is reimbursed or deductible.
Limitations
- Covers 2025 and 2026 only; earlier years and the 2027 rates are not in the table until the IRS publishes them.
- Standard-mileage method only: actual-expense calculations, parking, tolls and depreciation rules are not handled.
- Miles are taken as typed; the widget does not measure routes.
Where publishers use it
- A home-care agency's staff portal where carers turn a week of client visits into a reimbursement figure
- A sales team's expense-policy page showing the July 2026 rate change on real trips
- A charity's volunteer page explaining what 120 miles of delivery driving is worth as a deduction
- A bookkeeper's site for sole proprietors estimating the standard-mileage deduction for Schedule C
- A medical-travel guide estimating mileage to appointments for itemised medical expenses
Questions
Why are there two business rates in 2026?
The IRS raised the rate mid-year: 72.5 cents per mile for January 1 to June 30, 2026 (IR-2025-128) and 76 cents from July 1, 2026 (IR-2026-29). Trips are priced by their own date.
Why is the charity rate always 14 cents?
Congress wrote it into the tax code: 26 U.S.C. 170(i) says the standard mileage rate for charitable use of a passenger automobile shall be 14 cents per mile, so the IRS cannot adjust it for inflation.
Must my employer pay the IRS rate?
No. Employers set their own reimbursement rate, and many adopt the IRS business rate as their benchmark. How a payment above that rate is treated for tax is a question for the employer's payroll team.
Who can use the moving rate?
The IRS table labels the moving rate "military only": it is for members of the Armed Forces on active duty moving because of a military order. Other taxpayers cannot use it.
What should a mileage log contain?
The date, start and end points, business purpose and miles of each trip. The widget reads date, from, to and miles; keep the purpose in your own records.
