How it works

Everything starts from paid hours per year: hours per week multiplied by the weeks you are paid. A full-time US schedule of 40 hours over 52 weeks gives 2,080 paid hours, so 25 an hour becomes 52,000 a year. Unpaid weeks - a seasonal layoff, unpaid parental leave, a sabbatical - are taken out of the 52 before multiplying, while paid vacation and public holidays stay in because they are still paid. In the reverse direction the salary is divided by the same paid hours. The monthly figure is the annual total divided by 12 and the biweekly figure divides by 26, so both are averages; the weekly and daily figures describe one ordinary working week split over the working days you enter. All results are gross pay before income tax, social contributions or benefit deductions.

Calculation method

  • Paid weeks = weeks in the year - unpaid weeks
  • Paid hours a year = hours per week x paid weeks
  • Annual = hourly x paid hours a year; hourly = annual / paid hours a year
  • Monthly = annual / 12; biweekly = annual / 26
  • Per working week = hourly x hours per week; per day = weekly / working days

Worked examples

Full-time hourly job

Inputs: Hourly to annual; 25 an hour; 40 h a week; 5 days; 52 weeks; 0 unpaid

Result: Annual 52,000.00; monthly 4,333.33; biweekly 2,000.00; per week 1,000.00; per day 200.00

25 x 40 x 52 = 52,000.

Salary to hourly

Inputs: Annual to hourly; 60,000; 40 h; 52 weeks

Result: Hourly rate 28.85 (2,080 paid hours a year)

60,000 / 2,080.

Two unpaid weeks

Inputs: Hourly to annual; 25 an hour; 40 h; 52 weeks; 2 unpaid

Result: Annual 50,000.00

25 x 40 x 50 paid weeks.

Gross pay illustration only - no tax, deductions or local employment law are modelled.

Limitations

  • Assumes the same hours every paid week; variable or seasonal schedules need an average.
  • Gross figures only - no income tax, social security, pension deductions or overtime premiums.

Where publishers use it

  • Job boards that list hourly vacancies next to salaried ones, so applicants compare like with like
  • Recruitment agency pages converting contractor day rates and hourly offers into an annual figure
  • Career-advice articles on whether a 22-an-hour offer beats a 45,000 salary
  • Student and part-time job guides showing what 20 hours a week really adds up to
  • Union or HR intranet pages explaining how a salary maps to the hourly rate used for overtime
  • Warehouse, retail and delivery-driver recruitment ads quoting pay by the hour
  • Hospitality, nannying and caregiving agencies advertising hourly rates to families and households

Questions

Why multiply by 2,080?

2,080 is 40 hours x 52 weeks - the standard US full-time year. A 37.5-hour week gives 1,950 hours and a 35-hour week 1,820, so always set the hours your contract states.

Should paid vacation be taken out?

No. Paid vacation and public holidays are still paid, so they stay in the 52 weeks. Only remove weeks you are not paid for, such as unpaid leave or an off-season, using the unpaid weeks field.

Why is the monthly figure not hourly x 4 weeks?

A month averages 4.33 weeks (52 / 12). Using 4 understates monthly pay by about 7.7%, which is why the widget divides the annual figure by 12 instead.

What hourly rate does a 60,000 salary equal?

At 40 hours and 52 paid weeks: 60,000 / 2,080 = 28.85 an hour. At 37.5 hours it is 60,000 / 1,950 = 30.77.

Is biweekly the same as semi-monthly?

No. Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year; semi-monthly comes twice a month, 24 times. On 52,000 a year that is 2,000 versus 2,166.67 per paycheck.

Does it include overtime or tax?

No. It converts a single base rate into gross equivalents. Overtime premiums, bonuses, income tax and payroll deductions depend on your contract and jurisdiction and are not modelled.

How do I compare an hourly job with a salaried one?

Check the hours behind the salary. A 50,000 salary that routinely demands 50-hour weeks works out at 19.23 an hour, while a 22-an-hour job at 40 hours pays 45,760 - less per year but more per hour, plus overtime eligibility if the role is non-exempt.

What about tips or shift differentials?

Average them into the hourly rate. A server earning 12 base plus roughly 9 in tips per hour should enter 21; a night premium of 2 an hour on half of all shifts adds 1 to the average rate.

How do I convert a day rate?

Divide the day rate by the hours in a working day: a contractor quoting 360 a day for 8-hour days is on 45 an hour, which over 46 billable weeks of 40 hours equals 82,800 a year - before unbilled gaps between engagements.

Do apprentices and interns convert the same way?

Yes - the arithmetic is identical, but stipends, piece rates and commission-only roles have no fixed hourly base. For a stipend, divide it by the scheduled hours to compare it with a minimum-wage floor in your area.
