Freight Density Calculator Widget

Embed a freight density calculator for LTL shippers and brokers. Users enter each handling unit's dimensions, weight and count - with an optional second size - and get the density in pounds per cubic foot and kg/m³, plus the class on NMFTA's 13-step density scale that took effect on 19 July 2025.

How it works

Density is weight divided by cube. Following the NMFTA's 2025 guidance, each handling unit is measured at its greatest length, width and height in inches, pallet and any projections included, and the cubic inches are divided by 1,728 to give cubic feet; metric entries are converted from centimetres and kilograms first. NMFTA's own worked example - a 48 x 40 x 45 in pallet weighing 450 lb - comes to 50 ft³ and 9.00 lb/ft³. The class shown comes from the 13-subprovision density scale in Docket 2025-1, effective 19 July 2025: under 1 lb/ft³ is class 400, 8 to under 10 is class 100, 15 to under 22.5 is class 70, and 50 or more is class 50. With a second size of piece the widget reports the combined shipment density and each handling unit's own density, because Item 110 calculates density per handling unit unless the paperwork shows only a total weight. Many commodities have their own fixed class, so the density class is only for items the NMFC rates by density.

Calculation method

  • Cube (ft³) = L x W x H (in, greatest dimensions incl. pallet) / 1,728 x pieces
  • Density (lb/ft³) = total weight (lb) / total cube (ft³); kg/m³ = lb/ft³ x 16.0185
  • NMFC density scale (Docket 2025-1, eff. 19 July 2025), lb/ft³ -> class: <1 400; 1-<2 300; 2-<4 250; 4-<6 175; 6-<8 125; 8-<10 100
  • 10-<12 92.5; 12-<15 85; 15-<22.5 70; 22.5-<30 65; 30-<35 60; 35-<50 55; 50 and over 50
  • Several handling units: density per unit = its weight / its cube (NMFC Item 110 Sec. 8(d))

Worked examples

NMFTA worked example

Inputs: One pallet 48 x 40 x 45 in, 450 lb

Result: 50 ft³; 9.00 lb/ft³ (144.2 kg/m³); density class 100

Matches the NMFTA 2025 FAQ example.

Mixed handling units

Inputs: Two 48 x 40 x 48 in at 300 lb each, plus one 40 x 48 x 30 in at 600 lb

Result: 140 ft³, 1,200 lb, 8.57 lb/ft³ combined (class 100); units at 5.63 (class 175) and 18 (class 70)

Per-unit densities are what Item 110 uses when weights are shown per unit.

A density estimate and the density scale only; the NMFC item for your commodity and your carrier's tariff decide the class billed.

Limitations

  • Shows the density scale only; it cannot look up the NMFC item for a commodity, which may carry its own class.
  • Dimension-rounding rules in the full NMFC tariff (not public) and carrier-specific tariffs are not applied.
  • Accessorials, cubic-capacity rules and linear-foot rules are not modelled.

Where publishers use it

  • LTL carrier and 3PL websites helping shippers prepare a bill of lading
  • Freight broker quote forms that need the density before pricing
  • E-commerce and wholesale shippers moving palletised orders by LTL
  • Logistics training on the 2025 NMFC density-based classification changes
  • Furniture, fixture and equipment makers checking how packaging changes the density

Questions

How do I calculate freight density?

Multiply the greatest length, width and height in inches, divide by 1,728 for cubic feet, then divide the weight by the cubic feet. NMFTA's example: 48 x 40 x 45 in = 86,400 in³ = 50 ft³; 450 lb / 50 ft³ = 9.00 lb/ft³.

What changed in the NMFC in 2025?

NMFTA's Docket 2025-1, effective 19 July 2025, moved many items to density-based classification and introduced a single 13-subprovision density scale, from class 400 for under 1 lb/ft³ to class 50 for 50 lb/ft³ and over.

What class is 9 lb/ft³?

On the 2025 scale, 8 but less than 10 lb/ft³ is class 100. At 10 lb/ft³ it becomes class 92.5, so a small reduction in packaging height can move a shipment down a class.

Does the pallet count?

Yes. Measure the handling unit as tendered - pallet, overhang and projections included - at its greatest dimensions, and include the pallet's weight.

I have pallets of different sizes. Which density applies?

The NMFC calculates density on each handling unit, except where the shipping papers show only a total weight, in which case total weight over total cube may be used. The widget shows both: two 48 x 40 x 48 in pallets at 300 lb and one 40 x 48 x 30 in at 600 lb are 8.57 lb/ft³ combined, but 5.63 and 18 lb/ft³ separately.

Will every item be classed by density?

No. Many commodities keep a specific NMFC item and class based on handling, stowability or liability, regardless of density. Look up the item for your product; use the density class only when the item is density-rated.
