How it works
The widget uses the same formula as the A2Z Electricity Cost Calculator - watts x hours / 1000 gives kilowatt-hours, the unit on every electricity bill - and extends it to a list of appliances. Each appliance's share of the total is shown as a bar and in a table, which makes the big consumers obvious. The tariff is the visitor's own figure; fixed charges, taxes and time-of-use rates are not included. The publisher can preset the currency, tariff and appliance list.
Calculation method
- kWh per day = watts x hours per day x quantity / 1000
- Monthly kWh = daily x days in the month (30 by default); yearly = daily x 365
- Cost = kWh x price per kWh; share = appliance kWh / total kWh
Worked examples
1 kW heater for an hour a day
Inputs: Heater 1,000 W, 1 h a day, qty 1, tariff 0.15 per kWh, 30-day month
Result: 1 kWh a day; 4.50 a month; 54.75 a year
1,000 x 1 / 1,000 = 1 kWh; 30 x 0.15 = 4.50; 365 x 0.15 = 54.75.
Limitations
- Uses one flat unit rate: slab or tiered tariffs, time-of-use pricing, standing charges and taxes are not applied.
- Standby consumption and thermostat cycling are only included if the visitor enters them.

Questions
How do I compare a time-of-use tariff with a flat rate?
Split the use between the price bands. A dishwasher using 1.2 kWh a cycle costs 0.36 at a flat 0.30 per kWh but only 0.12 if it runs overnight at an off-peak 0.10 - across 250 cycles a year that saves 60. Run the widget once for each band with the hours spent in it.
Do devices on standby cost much?
Standby draws are small but never stop: a device idling at 5 W uses 43.8 kWh over a year (5 W x 8,760 hours). At 0.30 per kWh that is about 13 a year - enter 5 W and 24 hours a day to see the figure on your own tariff.
Where do I find the price per kWh?
On your electricity bill, usually as the unit rate or energy charge. If there are several slabs or time bands, use the one most of your usage falls in or an average.
What wattage should I enter for a fridge or air conditioner?
Their compressors switch on and off, so the rated wattage overstates use. Enter the average draw from a plug-in energy meter, or the rated watts with the hours the compressor actually runs.
Can I preset the appliances?
Yes, with ?v_items=Fan:75:8:2|TV:100:4:1 (name:watts:hours:quantity), plus v_tariff and v_days.
Does it include standing charges and tax?
No - only the energy charge. Fixed monthly charges and taxes vary by supplier and should be added separately.
