How it works
Gestation in the dog is counted most precisely from hormonal events, and the widget uses the ranges in the Merck Veterinary Manual. From the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, or the first rise of progesterone above baseline, whelping falls 64-66 days later (65 is used). Ovulation follows the LH peak by 2-3 days, which gives about 61-64 days from ovulation (63 used). From the first day of cytological diestrus, the due date is 56-58 days later. Counting from the first mating is the least precise, because sperm survive for days and eggs need time to mature: Merck gives 58-72 days, and the widget shows 63 days as the conventional point estimate with that full window. Milestones - palpation from about day 21, ultrasound at days 25-35, relaxin testing, skeletons on X-ray around days 42-45 and puppy counts after day 55 - are counted from the same reference.

- From first mating: due = date + 63 days; window 58-72 days
- From ovulation: due = date + 63 days; window 61-64 days (LH surge 64-66 days, ovulation 2-3 days after it)
- From LH surge or progesterone rise: due = date + 65 days; window 64-66 days
- From first day of diestrus: due = date + 57 days; window 56-58 days
- Milestones on gestation days 21, 25, 30, 45 and 55, shifted +2 days for LH dates and -6 days for diestrus dates

Limitations

Questions
How long is a dog pregnant?
About nine weeks. Merck puts whelping 64-66 days after the LH surge, which is about 63 days from ovulation. Counted from the first mating the range widens to 58-72 days, because the date of mating does not pin down when the eggs were fertilised.
Why is the window so wide from the mating date?
A bitch can accept a male several days before she ovulates, sperm survive several days in her tract, and eggs need 2-3 days after ovulation to mature. Fertilisation can therefore happen days after the mating, which is why vets prefer progesterone or LH-based timing.
When can a vet confirm the pregnancy?
Ultrasound is reliable from about day 25-35 of gestation, palpation of the uterine swellings is possible around day 21, a relaxin blood test becomes positive from roughly day 22-30, and puppies' skeletons show on X-ray from about day 42-45.
How do I know whelping is close?
Rectal temperature typically drops to about 37.1 degC (98.8 degF) 8-24 hours before whelping, and labour usually starts within 24 hours of progesterone falling below 2 ng/mL. Ask your vet about monitoring in the final week.
When should I count the puppies?
An X-ray taken after about day 55 is the most reliable way to count puppies, so the breeder knows when the last one has been born. Ultrasound is good for confirming pregnancy but poor for counting.
Does this work for cats?
No. Queens have a different reproductive physiology from bitches, with ovulation triggered by mating, so the hormone-based counting used here does not transfer. This widget only uses canine figures.
