CGPA to Percentage Converter Widget

Convert a CGPA into the percentage that application forms ask for, without guessing at an unofficial multiplier. The widget offers the CBSE indicative factor and VTU's published formula, each with its source, plus a custom option for any institution that prints its own conversion.

How it works

Every preset is a straight line, percentage = (CGPA - offset) x multiplier, with the two numbers taken from an official document. CBSE's Circular No. 24 of 28 May 2010, issued when Class X moved to grades, states that the overall indicative percentage of marks equals 9.5 x CGPA, so 8.4 becomes 79.8%. Visvesvaraya Technological University publishes (CGPA - 0.75) x 10 for its 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes, so 8.0 becomes 72.5%, and the widget repeats that restriction. Many other universities use different factors, and copying a multiplier from a neighbouring institution can move a result by several percentage points, so no other formula is presented as official: the custom option takes the multiplier and offset from the student's own circular. The widget also shows what a perfect 10 converts to under the chosen rule, a quick check that the formula is the intended one, and refuses CGPAs outside 0 to 10 or inputs that would produce a negative percentage.

Method

  • CBSE (Class X, CCE grading): percentage = 9.5 x CGPA
  • VTU 2015/2017/2018 schemes: percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10
  • Custom: percentage = (CGPA - offset) x multiplier

Worked examples

A CBSE Class X CGPA

Inputs: CGPA 8.4, CBSE preset

Result: 79.8%

9.5 x 8.4 = 79.8; a perfect 10 gives 95%.

A VTU engineering CGPA

Inputs: CGPA 8, VTU preset

Result: 72.5%

(8 - 0.75) x 10 = 72.5, with a reminder that it applies to the 2015/2017/2018 schemes.

Limitations

  • Only two official presets are included; every other institution needs its own multiplier and offset typed in.
  • The CBSE factor is described by CBSE itself as an indicative equivalence and was issued for the Class X grading scheme.
  • Percentages converted this way are not marks: they cannot be added to other marks or used to recompute a division.

Where publishers use it

  • Class XI admission pages that ask for Class X marks as a percentage
  • Job application guides where the employer's form has a percentage box
  • Engineering college portals for VTU-affiliated institutes
  • Study-abroad consultancies explaining how to present Indian grades
  • Scholarship pages with a minimum-percentage eligibility rule

Questions

Where does the 9.5 come from?

CBSE's Circular No. 24 of 28 May 2010 and its later FAQs give 'Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 x CGPA' and the same 9.5 factor for each subject's grade point. CBSE calls it indicative, not an exact mark.

Can I use 9.5 for my university CGPA?

Only if your university says so. The CBSE factor was written for its school grading system. Universities publish their own formulas, which is why the widget has a custom option instead of a universal multiplier.

Why does VTU subtract 0.75?

That is the formula VTU publishes as its standard for the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes: (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. A CGPA of 10 therefore converts to 92.5%, not 100%.

Why does the widget refuse a CGPA of 0.5 with the VTU formula?

(0.5 - 0.75) x 10 = -2.5, a negative percentage, which shows the formula was not designed for values that low. The widget reports it as outside the formula's range.

Which number should I write on a form, CGPA or percentage?

If the form accepts CGPA, give CGPA with its scale, since that is what the transcript certifies. Use a converted percentage only when asked, and name the formula you used.

Will a foreign university accept my converted percentage?

Usually they want the official transcript, and credential evaluators such as WES do their own conversion from your grades. Quote the CGPA with its scale, and add a percentage only with the formula your university certifies, ideally with its circular attached.
